They have climbed back to No. 1–in the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division. They are the overwhelming favorites to stage another rematch with Clemson in the ACC championship game. There is even chatter that his season could be the breakthrough season for a Miami football program, which traditionally started in the Top 10 in pre-season and worked its way up the ladder.
All of this under the guidance of Mark Richt, who made a habit of bringing his teams into title contention during his stay at Georgia. So is this the season the Canes’ go bowling with the big boys? They sort of did it last season, earning an Orange Bowl berth and finishing with 10 wins.
But the final three games were all losses, including an embarrassing 38-3 rout by Clemson in the ACC title game.
Richt has the talent–Miami has had back to back excellent recruiting seasons. He has senior QB Malik Rosier back and WR Ahmmon Richards. They have speed and experience at the skill positions. Defensively there are some question marks, which could be a warning sign.
We will know fairly quickly the character of this Miami team after its opener against LSU in Arlington, Texas. They get FSU at home and aside from a road game at Virginia Tech, the Canes could cruise into December unbeaten or with one loss.
What happens after that determines just how high the Canes will climb.
