You know it’s bad beat when the sons of guys you covered in college start ruining your weekly picks, but that’s exactly what happened last week in Minnesota when DB Antoine Winfield JUNIOR intercepted a game-tying pass against Fresno State.

Not just an interception, but one of the greatest picks you’ll see all season. Just my luck. Fresno State, getting 2.5 points on the road, appeared ready to send the game to OT before Winfield’s circus-act INT. I frankly never saw Antoine Sr., make a better play than that for Ohio State in the John Cooper 1990s.

Is there another father’s son out there that’s ready to ruin our Rankman & Son family side business? Does Orlando Pace have a kid ready to scoop and score the fumble that ruins my over-under? What about a Ron Dayne Jr. out there ready to wreck my line?

W.C. Fields was once asked if he liked children: He responded, “I do if they’re properly cooked.”

That said I’ll move forward with one of mine, who also went 1-2 last week partly because Northwestern went sunny-side up at home against Duke in the Smart Money Bowl.

We’ll do better this week, we promise, with renewed vim and vigor (with a splash of lime)

Here are the games we are playing:

Father Knows Bets

USC at Texas (-3.5)

Fresno State (-1.5) at UCLA

Rutgers at Kansas at Kansas (O\U 44.5)

Son of Rankman

Boise State at Oklahoma State (O\U 64.5)
